Kirkland Nursery Reveal

Today, I’m excited to share our Kirkland Nursery project with you. A few months ago, our clients came to us with a problem: to create an adaptable space that could evolve over time as their child grew. We set out to solve this through the use of flexible furnishings, pieces that can be used in different ways over time. We incorporated a crib that converts into a toddler bed, a neutral colored dresser with clean, simple lines, and textiles with simple prints. Design tip: With furnishings, generally the more simple the piece, the more flexibility it has. Opt for furnishings with clean lines, and keep foundational pieces neutral in color to repurpose over the years.

The room was a blank slate to start and had a large window which brought in a lot of natural light. We began with the walls. To add dimension, we installed and painted bead board, which ran across the lower half perimeter of the room:

Wall moulding, such as bead board, is a great way to elevate the overall look and feel of a space and keep things from falling flat. We originally planned to wallpaper above the bead board, but decided to keep things simple and transitional by using a grey paint instead.

The overall direction was to keep the room traditional in its aesthetic, so we applied a neutral color palette (namely, lots of creams, beige tones, and shades of grey) throughout with hints of bright color for a light and playful feel.

With this neutral palette, we focused on mixing textures - lots of it! A few examples are the wool pouf, shag rug, wood wall decor, and felt mobile above the crib: these elements work together to create a cozy and serene ambience in the space. For a light and playful feel, we added baby animals through wall decor, toys and book covers.

To balance the visual weight of the crib and rocker on one side of the room, we added a dresser directly opposite. The dresser serves dual purpose for use as a changing table and also provides easy access to baby clothes or other necessary supplies. This piece is also versatile in that it can be repurposed for use in different rooms in a home over time (think: Master Bedroom, Guest Bedroom).

Below, a side-by-side comparison of the room, before and after. It’s come a LONG way! We got rid of the beige of the walls, in lieu of grey paint and white bead board, both of which reflect the natural light beautifully.
