Lockhaven Remodel:
Master Bath Before/After
Last year, I started designing a master bathroom in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle and am excited to share the reveal with you today! With this remodel, we wanted to create a serene and modern retreat that blended with the other rooms across the home, including the master bedroom next door.
Originally, the materials in the bathroom were traditional in aesthetic, so we gutted everything and started from scratch. I knew it was important to add natural light (there was very little to start) so we created a layout to add them along an exterior wall. I’ve always believed natural light is one of (if not the most) transformative changes in a room as it positively affects how one feels.
Here are a few before photos:
BEFORE
IN PROGRESS
Above, an in-progress photo after demolition. We made the existing window in the standing shower longer and added a large window next to it to sit above a freestanding tub.
Here’s how it turned out!
AFTER
To maximize functionality in the room, we added a tall cabinet with open shelving at the end of the vanity. This allowed for a designated area to hang, store and grab towels while walking into and out of the shower.
The interiors of a few cabinets were also customized, one of which holds hair styling tools! Below is a video of what the cabinet looks like from the inside. I love that it can be used when standing at either sink and is easy to access for getting ready:
For the floors, we did a porcelain tile in a herringbone pattern to add personality. Originally, the plan was to do slate, but transitioned to a porcelain tile to keep things low maintenance. I documented the pros and cons of using porcelain vs. slate in this post!
The wall that originally surrounded the standing shower was replaced with glass to open up the space, and we intentionally kept the shower glass hardware minimal throughout for a modern, clean look.
I also had the shower glass run straight into the floor to save space (every inch counts when space is tight!) This allowed for an easy transition into and out of the shower, and also helped achieve the modern, seamless look we were after.
Below, a video walk-through of the master bathroom, before (left) and after (right). These videos were taken about 8 months apart!
I’ll be sharing the fireplace and guest bathroom from this project on the blog, coming soon.
